Wood chippers are routinely used and hired by tree surgeons. They are expensive to buy, parts are expensive and need replaced regularly, and maintenance of the equipment can be time consuming. Most of the bigger brands of wood chippers can be hired out, such as Timberwolf, Greenmech, Schiesling and Jenson. Most wood chippers work in a similar way but tree surgeons should check that the blades are sharp and the feed-in rollers are working well.  Occasionally blockages occur in the chute which discharges the chip or a bit of wood can get stuck in the feed in rollers – these problems are easily solved by taking off the chute and clearing it out and putting in a large bit of wood to clear the offending lump of wood.

Tracked chippers are the height of luxury as you do not need to drag the branches to the chipper, you can drive the chipper to the branches.  They are however, far more expensive to buy and to run and as they sit on a trailer, they need to be towed around.

6’’ chippers are perfectly good for most jobs as one can log any branches larger than 6’’.  8’’ chippers are useful for railway work and large clearance as they are a time saving device.
