With the price of electricity and gas increasing so rapidly, the firewood business is becoming quite a profitable business. Tree surgeons around the country are tapping into this opportunity with logs, kindles and wood chips for wood fuel being collected and sold on to the ever increasing market.

People living in rural properties traditionally store and use wood for open fires and wood burning stoves and see it as a failing if they have to buy in logs. Now the countryside is home to people who have moved in, retired or people with a second home. Nearer the towns, in semi rural areas, there is increased demand and prices are at a premium.

Tree surgery is a physically demanding profession, so diversifying into firewood and log supply will add to the physical nature of this. Investing in a good log splitter will make the job easier, and having somewhere to store logs to season, will make selling at peak times and at the highest prices.

Selling logs pre-sized and in bags, is a good way of keeping everything tidy and organised. Customers with wood burning stoves can use softer woods that are cheaper and lighter, but those with open fires will want heavier, seasoned harder woods which come at premium prices.

Knowing the market and your customer is so important with firewood. Summer months spent logging and stocking up logs will be rewarded during the cold winter months when demand is high and prices are at their peak.
