This is a great way to convert your lovely native timber into useful wood for fencing, material and construction or for furniture/craft enterprise.

It is best to keep the trunks of good timber as long as possible in a pile and then bring in a mobile sawmill to do your work or transport it to a fixed sawmill to do the work for you.  One should get advanced costings on the wood you want to process and find out whether the sawmill will take your timber as some are reluctant to do so as they are wary of nails in timber.

Use your own milled wood to add character to your home – milled elm to floor a house, or build a staircase using yew, oak is excellent for room beams or cherry wood can make a great bed.

Local sawmills are great places for supplying everything from fence posts to building fire wood shelters to supplying furniture makers. If sustainability is one of your primary concerns then local sawmills are definitely the way forward!!
