Believe it or not but this is heaven for any tree surgery business as it is the most wooded area in Britain with 22% of it covered in woodland of which 27% is covered by ancient woodland. this is partly because of the affluence of the county and the large estates which border London. The heavy clay soils of the Weald are less hospitable to ancient British trees compared to the Lower Greensand which has wonderfully fertile and tree friendly soils. For tree lovers - A 4,000 year old Yew tree at Crowhurst church - (one of the top 50 UK Jubilee Trees) this Yew has a large hollow trunk which has survived much, even a Civil War Canon ball which was found in the C19th century!! It was also featured in Thomas Pakenhams 'Remarkable Trees' Other interesting trees can be found Albury Park and House where one also enjoy the lovely gardens designed by John Evelyn, Bagshot Park, Bagshot, Burford Lodge, Westhumble, Dorking, Busbridge Lakes, Godalming, Coverwood House, Peaslake Road, Ewhurst, Ewell Court Park, West Ewell, Gatton Hall, Grayswood Hill Highercombe Road, Halsemere which has a phenomenal private tree collection, Hambledon Church, Hannah Peschar Sculpture Garden in Okewood, Hydon Nurseries, Hydon Heath, Knaphill and Slocock Nursery, Woking, Leith Hill, Dorking, Nonsuch Park, Ewell, Oatlands Hotel in Weybridge, Old Kiln Museum in Tilford, Painshill Park Landscape Garden, Cobham, Polecat Copse, Haslemare which has some incredibly tall trees, Priory Park, Reigate, Ramster, Chiddingfold, Royal Holloway and Bedford College, Englefield Green at London University, Surrey University Campus, Guilford, Sutton Place, Guildford, Tandridge Church with a lovely Yew, Windsor Great Park where there is the National Collection of Magnolia, Winkworth Arboretum in Godalming which was started by Wilfred Fox and specialises in maples and Sorbus, Wisley RHS Garden, Ripley - the top garden of the RHS, and Woking Park, Kingfield Road, Woking.
