Suffolk


Suffolk is a beautiful agricultural county which inspired John Constable to do his wonderful paintings. Its dry warm summers are conducive to tree growth and it has many ancient old oaks and some surviving elms. For tree lovers - Abbey Garden, Mustow Street, Bury St Edmunds with its lovely lime avenues (circa 1720's) and the churchyard has some amazing trees, East Bergholt Place, East Bergholt - has some interesting Chinese species, Glenham Hall has lime trees with girths of 6 metres and oaks with 8.5m trunks, Hengrave Hall, Beccles, has some excellent examples of oak pollards, Ickworth Park, built in 1795, bury St Edmond, Kentwell Hall is a moated C16th house with lovely cedars, Notcutt's Nursery, Cumberland Street, Woodbridge, Park Drive Worlington, Beccles has a fantastic large Caucasian Elm on the verge, and Staverton Park, Eyke, Woodbridge has some lovely old pollarded oaks which are over 700 years old - there are some terrific hollies here too and the medieval deer park is one of the best preserved parks in the country!
