Perth and Kinross Perth and Kinross is probably my favourite area to discover 'champion trees' - there are lovely deciduous trees in many areas - particularly Strathearn and Strathtay - the soils are rich, the weather warm and humid and there is shelter from the Western lying hills. It is the only county in the U.K which has three jubilee trees in it! For tree lovers - There are three particular tree sites of note ( top 50 UK Jubilee Trees). The first is the Fortingall Yew - this tree sits in the churchyard of Fortingall and is said to be the oldest living organism in Europe - 5,000 years old!!!! In 1769 it's girth was 56.5feet and today it is even bigger, although sadly it is showing signs of deterioration. The second is the Douglas Fir, Scone Palace which was planted from seed collected by David Douglas in 1834. Douglas was born and worked at Scone Palace and it grows very close to where he was born. The third is the Parent Larch, Hilton Dunkeld House Hotel, Dunkeld - it is called a parent larch because it was one of the 'parents' for the large scale planting done by the Dukes of Atholl. It is one of the original seed brought over in 1738 and with a girth of 5.6 metres is one of the largest larch trees in Europe. Other interesting trees can be found at Birnam, Dunkeld, Blair Castle, Blair Atholl, Pitlochry, - the amazing Diana's Grove of conifers is lies here, Cluny Castle Garden, Aberfeldy, Dunkeld Cathedral, Dunkeld House Hotel, Dunkeld, Glendoick Gardens, Glendoick, Glencarse - specimen rhodies and trees form China collected by the Mr Cox and Sir Peter Hutchison, The Hermitage, Dunkeld - check out the incredible Douglas Fir, Megginch Castle, Crieff, Murthly Castle, Murthly, North Inch, Perth and Rossie Priory.
