Oxfordshire

Oxfordshire is the least populated county in the South East and as a result it has 75% of the land dedicated to agriculture and 40% of the county is designated as areas of outstanding beauty! The best place to grow trees - where the soils are most suitable - are to be found along the North West of the Cotswolds, in the Chilterns of the South East and around Oxford itself which is a town that dates back to 912A.D. For tree lovers - Cedar of Lebanon, Childrey - (one of the top 50 UK Jubilee Trees) this tree was brought to the UK by Dr Edward Pocock in 1638/9. He planted the tree on his rectory lawn in 1646 and many believe it to be the oldest Cedar in Britain. The Cedar of Lebanon was a favourite of Capability Brown, the C18th landscape gardener, and he used it in several of his projects on large estates. Other interesting trees can be found Buscot Park, Faringdon(circa 1780's), the home of Lord Faringdon where you can see some impressive Lombardy Poplars, The Harcourt Arboretum, Nuneham Courtenay, Oxford Botanic Garden, Rose Lane, Oxford University Parks - at Wadham College there is an ancient tulip tree and at Merton College there is a Mullberry tree associated with James I who attempted to create a silk industry, Rousham House, Steeple Aston, and Watton Park where there are some ancient oaks and hornbeams.
