Nottinghamshire

Nottinghamshire You only have to say Nottinghamshire and Sherwood Forest and Robin Hood comes to mind - the county is synonymous with trees! The country estates or dukeries which lie between Mansfield and Worksop on the sandy soils of Shewood Forest in the North East contain large areas of old parkland and ancient trees. For tree lovers - There are two particular tree sites of note ( top 50 UK Jubilee Trees) The first is Major Oak in Sherwood Forest, Edwinstone - It is called the Major Oak because Major Hayman Rooke described it in 1790. It has also been called the Queen's Oak or simply the Queen. It is hollow in the middle, has a girth of 10.6m, and its branches spread 28metres. The second is the Original Bramley, Southwell which is the oldest Bramley apple tree sown from seed by a girl in 1809. It is called a Bramley tree because the owner of the tree gave graftings of the tree to a nurseryman in 1856 on condition he called the tree after him!
