London South

Despite the pollution, heavy clay and gravely soils, London has amazing parks and a history of arboriculture. Many of the older, more famous parks and trees in London owe there heeritage to old estates which have been incorporated into Greater London. For tree lovers -There are two particular trees of note ( top 50 UK Jubilee Trees). The first is the Charlton House Mulberry, in Greenwich. This, many claim is the oldest mulberry tree in Britain having been introduced to the country by King James I who was trying to create a silk industry around 1608. Charlton House belonged to Prince Henry's tutor - Adam Newton. The second, is the Old Lion Ginko, in Kew Gardens, Richmond. This tree was brought back to the UK in the 18th century (1754). It was transferred to Kew from the Duke of Argyll's estate in 1762 and can be spotted near the Wisteria Cage which is close to the secluded Garden. There are many other incredible trees at Kew and it is a tree lovers heaven - I have spent days there - do not try and take it all in at once - there are 100 hectares of arboretum!! Other interesting trees can be found at Barnes where there is one of the largest old Plane trees at the Old Ranelegh Club grounds, Battersea Park, Battersea, Beckenham Place Park, Beckenham, Brockwell Park, Brixton, Bushy Park, Hampton Wick, Cannizaro Park,West Side, Wimbledon Common Chelsea Physic Garden, Swan Walk, Chelsea, City of Westminster Cemetry, The Broadway, Hanwell, Danson Park, Danson Road, Bexleyheath, Hall Place, Bourne Road, Bexley, Holland Park, Abbotsbury Road, Kensington, Hyde Park, Kensington, Kensington Gardens, Kensington, Lesnes Abbey, Abbey Road, Belvedere, Marble Hill Park, Richmond Road, Twickenham, Maryon Park, Woolwich Road Charlton, Osterley Park, Osterley, Palace Yard, Houses of Parliament, and York House, Richmond Road, Twickenham.
