Lincolnshire

Lincolnshire which is located in the East of England is very fertile and has strong Roman ties with its capital Lincoln being Roman in origin. Trees stretch all over the county although, because it is very agricultural, they are largely confined to parks and the variety of trees are restricted by the weather which can be cold and dry in the winter. For tree lovers - There are two particular tree sites of note ( top 50 UK Jubilee Trees) The first is at Bowthorpe Park Farm, Witnam-on-the-Hill - where the Largest Oak in the UK can be found. It has a girth of 12.8m and in 1768 twenty people dined inside it. It had a door, floor, benches and a pigeon house above! The second is Newtons' Apple Tree at Woolsthorpe Manor. This 'Flower of Kent' variety of tree inspired Newton - his 'notion of gravitation' came to mind when he watched an apple fall. The main tree fell in 1820 but it has re-rooted. Other interesting location for trees in Lincolnshire are : Belton House, Belton, Grantham with was built in the C17th and has a parkland, orangery and children's adventure playground, and Brocklesby Park, Limber which has an impressive, unique for Lincolnshire mature tree collection located near the Humber estuary.
