The growing conditions for trees in the fertile valleys of Gloucestershire are ideal, particularly in the South For tree lovers -There are two particular trees of note ( top 50 UK Jubilee Trees). The first is the Tortworth Sweet Chesnut at Totworth Church-Tortworth Court, Tortworth, Wotton-under-Edge which is extraordinary in that the branches of the tree have dropped toground and rooted to become trees in themselves! The one tree looks like a small woodland! It is said that it was planted in 800A.D. - historical records trace it back to the C12th. The second, is the Coppiced Lime Stools at Westonbirt National Arboretum, Tetbury which is the oldest lime tree in the UK and carbon dates to 2000 years old. Other interesting trees can be found at Abbotswood Forest Garden, Cinderford, Forest Dean, Batsford Arboretum, Moreton-in Marsh with its National Collection of flowering cherries, Cannop, Forest Dean, Cerney House Gardens, North Cerney, Cirencester, Cirencester Abbey Park, Cirencester Park, Colesbourne, Cheltenham, Dyrham Park, Chippenham, Hidcote Manor Garden, Hidcote Bartrim, Chipping Campden, Highnam Court, Highnam, Horton Court, Horton, Lydney Park, Lydney, Painswick, Parkhill, Forest Dean, Pitville Park, Evesham Road, Cheltenham, Sezincote, Moreton-in-Marsh, Speech House Arboretum, Coleford, Stanway House, Stanway, Staunton Church, Coleford - with its huge yew, Stratford Park, Stratford Road, Stroud, and Westbury Court, Westbury-on-Severn.
