Essex, situated to the North East of London has the driest climate in the UK and has the oldest recorded town in Colchester. The heavy soils and dry climate do not lend themselves well to budding horticulturalists but there are some interesting trees in Essex and many elms have survived the purge of the dreaded Dutch Elm Disease. For tree lovers - The World's End Black Poplar- (one of the top 50 UK Jubilee Trees) this tree which is owned privately and grows on parkland. (one of 30 incredibly rare large pollarded black female poplar) Other interesting trees can be found at Audley End, Saffron Walden which is the home of the Howard Oak and the Audley End Oak - well worth a visit is a woodland grove called the Elysian Garden, Dryads Hall, Loughton, Easton Lodge - the home of noted arboriculturist Maynard Granville and interesting due to its old oaks, field maple, Peto's Yew walk, Lime Avenue and Daisy's tree house in a 500 year old oak, Hatfield Forest, Bishop Stortford with its fascinating hornbeam pollards and over 850 ancient trees in a medieval forest, Markshall Estate, Coggeshall, and Writtle College and Park, Loves Green, Writtle.
