East Sussex

A huge round of applause is owed to the County Council who imposed a Dutch Elm Disease Contol Zone between Eastbourne and Portslade in the 1960's. This visionary excercise enabled some fine trees to be preserved which would have otherwise perished. There are also some terrific examples of municipal tree planning in Brighton and Hastings where one will find some fine speciments. For tree lovers - The Brighton Pavillion Elm in Brighton- (one of the top 50 UK Jubilee Trees) this elm tree is a pleasure to behold, if one wonders how the British landscape would have looked had it not been for the dread Dutch Elm Disease. It is one of of the few survivors of the rare Dutch Elm Disease of the 1970's Other interesting trees can be found at Alexandria Park, Hastings which is arguably Britain's best park for trees - if you are keen on oaks, there is a good oak collection, Ashburnham Place, Ninefield, Battle, Banks Farm, Barcombe, Beauport Park, Battle Road, St Leonards-on-Sea, Brighton University, Buxted Park, Buxted, Uckfield, Carden Park, Carden Avenue, Crowhurst Church with its superb yew, East Brighton Park, Wilson Avenue, Whitehawk, Eridge Park, Tunbridge Wells which has the England's largest common beech and an amazing Crab Apple Tree, Hampden Park, Eastbourne, Happy Valley Park, Woodingdean, Herstmonceux Castle with its ancient sweet chesnuts - one with a plaque dating to circa 1700, Hove Cemetry, Old Shoreham Road, Preston Park, London Road, Sheffield Park, Fletching which is fantastic to go and see in Autumn for its lovely colours, and Sussex University Campus, Stanmer Park, Falmer.
