Derbyshire

This County was historically quite industrial and this could have affected the growth of some conifers, however, it has some fine old estates in the southern lowlands and in the sheltered parts of the peak district and is quite beautiful. Lord Byron was so enthusiastic about it's beauty that he compared it to Greece and Switzerland and Victorians loved it for its spa towns of Matlock and Buxton. Britain's semi precious stone Blue John comes from Castleton, Derbyshire! For tree lovers - The Morton Horse Chesnut - (one of the top 50 UK Jubilee Trees) this was the tree that inspired the Great British Trees Campaign - it sits at the junction of Higham Lane and the B6014 and is stunning in June when it is in blossom. Legend understands it that a 19th century stage coach which overturned on the bend sits underneath this tree. Other interesting trees can be found at Chatsworth House which has 40 hectares of stunning grounds, Calke Abbey near Ticknall, Longshaw Estate where there are two excellent specimens of rowan and crab apple and oak, Radburne Hall which is home to some ancient oaks and hawthorns, Mugginton Church has a tree with a 25ft girth, Darley Dale Church has a huge Yew tree, Elvaston Castle Country Park on Borrowash Road Elvaston and Derby Aroboretum in Arboretum Square, Derby
