Cumbria

Cumbria, the North West of England, has often been called 'England's most beautiful corner' and has a world heritage site in Hadrians Wall and the Lake District. It has mild coasts and the Lakes with a high rainfall which is excellent for conifer growing. Victorians gardeners were drawn to this county for its beauty and climate. One encouraging sign of broadleaf deciduous woodland is the large population of red squirrel. For tree lovers- There are three particular trees of note ( top 50 UK Jubilee Trees). The first is the Borrowdale Yew - this is actually one of four trees and is celebrated in Wordsworth's poem 'Yew trees' and described as 'those fraternal four of Borrowdale'. Eight people can fit inside its hollow trunk and its well worth a visit. The second is Levens Hall Yew which thanks to topiary has a fantastic umbrella shape to it - it is world renowned! The third is the Holker Lime at Holker Hall which is a common lime but uncommon in its monumental fluted trunk which is a site to behold!! If one is in needing a youth hostel to stay in with fantastic trees - both Barrow House in Borrowdale and Estwaite Lodge Hawkshead have great trees. For smarter accomodation - try Lancrigg Hotel, Easedale, Grasmere or if you want a place for your old age where there are nice trees, there cannot be many better than Balla Wray Nursing Home, High Wray, Ambleside. Other places with notable trees are Geltsdale Castle, Castle Carrock which is a SSSI and has pollarded ash and ancient alders, Muncaster Castle, Ravenglass, Rydal hall, Ambleside with the amazingly beautiful and huge Rydale Sweet Chesnut tree. If one follows signs to the 'Giant Tree' at Thirlmere Keswick on can catch a glimpse of the tallest Common Silver Fir and then there is Wray Castle, Low Wray, Ambleside.
