Cheshire, which is set in the shadow of the Penines and surrounds an old Roman town called Chester, does not have the best of soil for trees but there are some notable areas particularly down to the South and East.
For tree lovers - There are two particular trees of note ( top 50 UK Jubilee Trees). The first is the Marton Oak, Marton, a sessile oak and an impressive tree - back in 1880 it was described as the largest tree in England and to give you an idea of its size - it has a girth of 13.4metres and has been used as a pigsty and bullpen amongst other things!! The second is the Thorn Tree, Appleton, which is decorated each June with flowers and ribbons - it is said to have grown from the staff of Joseph of Arimathea which was grown from the thorns that had been put around Christ's head!
Other places to visit are Aldington Hall with its amazing avenue of lime trees, maze and water garden, Jodrell Bank Arboretum which spreads over 35 acres and has a collection of crab apple and white beam, Lyme Park - used for Pride and Prejudice - two fine lime trees, Manchester University, Ness Botanic Gardens, Ness, Tatton Park, Knutsford with its beech maze dating back to 1795, and Little Moreton Hall which is a sixteenth century manor house with a fantastic Yew tunnel
