Cambridgshire

Cambridgeshire is a paradox in tree terms in that it has rich soils and hot summers and yet is the least wooded county in England - largely because it is devoted to agricultúre! It does, however, play host to a variety of elm that has survived the disease and many places that are worth a visit. For tree lovers -There are two particular trees of note ( top 50 UK Jubilee Trees). The first is the 'Dawn Redwood' which was planted in 1948 and came from China. This deciduous conifer is of interest because the only time it had been seen before was in fossils. It is located at Cambridge University Botanic garden amongst a range of collections of species of trees covering 18 hectares. The second, is the First Plane tree planted at Bishops Palace, Ely planted in 1680 - it became famous for coping with pollution. Other good tree hunting grounds are Anglesey Abbey, Lode with its arboretum and working water wheel, Bedford Purlieus, Brampton wood - SSSI and dates back to 1000AD and home to dormice, Peckover House, North Brink, Wisbech with its 300 year old orange trees in the orangery, Wicken Fen - oldest nature reserve in England and Wimpole Hall with its national collection of Walnut trees.
