Scottish Borders

The Scottish Borders, lying in the south of Scotland and bordering England, has some lovely estates with special trees which mostly run down the valleys of the Tweed. The Tweed is famous for its excellent salmon fishing. For tree lovers - Capon Tree - Jedburgh - (one of the top 50 UK Jubilee Trees) This ancient oak has religious significance in that the Capuchin monks sheltered under it when they went on their pilgrimage to the Jedburgh Abbey. It is a hollow old oak and is one of the last of the ancient Jed Forest. In July, during the Jedburgh Festival a horse rider every year grabs a sprig of the tree and wears it in his lapel. Other interesting trees can be found at Dawyck Botanic Garden, Stobo, Peebles - the arboretum is over three hundred years old, Dryburgh Abbey Hotel, St Boswells, Harestanes Country Centre, Jedburgh, The Hirsel, Coldstream, and Monteviot, Jedburgh.
