Berkshire is a small county where it is said Kenneth Grahame was inspired by the trees to write about the 'Wild wood' in 'Wind in the Willows'. It was given the title royal county in 1958 with Windsor castle as a focal point.
For Tree Lovers - The outstanding tree in Berkshire is the Ankerwycke Yew at Runnymede (one of the top 50 UK Jubilee Trees) which is 2,500 years old and is said to have witnessed the signing of the Magna Carta in 1215 and the courtship of Anne Boleyn and Henry VIII in the 1530's. Windsor Great Park is the place which stands out in Berkshire as the place to go for a number of impressive trees! It is managed by the crown estate and has medieval pollarded oaks, the Empire Oaks and the National collection of llex. Look out for the legendary Herne oak where a young game keeper threw himself in front of a stag to save the king. If you happen to be driving near the B3348 - take a detour and check out the Giant Sequoia which were planted in 1869 - the avenue runs along the road! Other noteworthy places for trees are Bisham Woods (500 years old) and managed by the woodland trust, Whiteknights, Reading and Bridge Gardens, Hungerfood.
